Today Radio New Zealand aired an interview I was lucky enough to be given about a year ago.
Lynda Chanwai-Earle contacted me during last year's (2012) Auckland Festival of Photography interested in interviewing me about my China work that was part of the 'A Stranger Paradise' exhibition that Edward Howie & I put together for the festival.

Today it finally aired, and although I'm one of those people who cringes and winces whenever hearing themselves waffle on I'm very grateful to Lynda for the support and being so kind in editing the story together.

For anyone that missed it and may be interested to listening to 15 minutes of my ramblings about China & Photography press play on the player above to hear the replay.

Thanks so very much again to Lynda & Radio NZ.
If you don't already listen to National Radio then you're a nobody

New work added to the portfolio: Yangshuo Rafts

Yangshuo County is one of the most popular areas of China, especially for Western Travellers, and for very good reason. The beauty of the iconic limestone peaks cannot be humbled. The peaks rise out of the rice fields while rivers twist and turn amongst them, famous enough to have made it onto the 20 Yuan note. It is one of the quietest and most spectacular areas in all of China. Throughout the Guangxi province the rafts are an icon and tourist photo mainstay. Traditionally used for fishing, they are now mainly used by tourists wandering down the rivers watching the karst peaks drift by.

Finally...I've managed to upload some images from last year's 'A Stranger Paradise' Exhibition.

The exhibition was part of Auckland's Festival of Photography and featured my China work and Edward Howie's Colombia work. Brief description from the advertising hype:

Auckland photographers Brodie Quinn and Edward Howie come together to explore the notion of ‘A Stranger Paradise’.

This exhibition brings together essays from China and Colombia depicting the life of two distinct places, cultures and traditions. The images show how both photographers became strangers immersed in the daily lives of these distant places to give an outsiders view of culture, practices, environment, and spaces in a sometimes humorous light. The ensuing body of work invites you into their experiences and travels throughout China and Colombia, searching for those stranger moments of others’ lives. “Paradise” is an elusive notion with diverse depictions often found in absurd places. It is this subjective notion of someone’s paradise which is explored in this exhibit of stranger encounters.

Over 6 million visitors scale the steps every year and for centuries poets and writers have climbed the mountain in search of inspiration and today there is no shortage of temples, inscriptions, carvings, stone tablets, love locks, ribbons, wishes and prayers scattered all over the mountain.

Some numbers to make it sexy: 100 million years old, tallest peak over 1800 metres high, over 15 million visitors annually, over 50 kilometres of tracks, rated AAAAA scenic area in China (thats a lot of A's). Huang Shan may not be in the top 5 holly mountains in China but it is widely regarded as the most beautiful and spectacular.
